Gerard is one of Australia's leading restructuring lawyers, achieving imaginative commercial solutions to resolve complex problems whilst balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders.

He has acted in many of the largest insolvency litigation matters in Australia and has successfully represented clients in the High Court of Australia. He also has acted on many of the largest restructuring/insolvency matters of recent times including the Global Hastie Group, the restructuring of Cubbie station, the Darling Harbourside shopping and restaurant complex, Gunns Ltd and the restructuring of the Redbank Power Station (formerly part of the Alinta Group and the Keating Piggery).

He advises New York Hedge Funds on the acquisition and restructure of Companies to provide flexible capital solutions to multiple stakeholders.

He has advised in relation to senior debt, mezzanine debt, complex capital structures, in relation to various financial products, including international syndicated facilities, bi lateral facilities, working capital facilities and the injection of new money involving super priority senior debt.

Many of these restructurings have been informal and consensual and some have been by way of a scheme of arrangement or using other lateral restructuring options.

He is well respected by his peers for bringing a lateral approach to complex matters and was recently recognised in the Legal500 for 2018/19.
