Emma Peters has been nominated as Finalist for ‘Senior Associate of the Year – SME Law’ in the Lawyers Weekly, Women in Law Awards 2020.

Emma Peters is an integral part of Cowell Clarke’s Corporate and Commercial team and has consistently demonstrated outstanding work including designing and developing a modern slavery compliance offering for our clients that has demonstrated great leadership skills.

Emma’s primary focus is on corporate governance and compliance. Emma has developed expertise in the regulatory requirements of modern slavery. Emma has real world understanding of businesses operating on a global scale and the regulatory, compliance and legal framework associated with international operations.

With Emma’s broad skill set in corporate and commercial law, she also has experience in implementing contract management systems, standard documents and templates, drafting and implementing business policies and procedures, contract and tender review and business sales and purchasing.

Emma has previously stated that “On a big picture level, I am proud to be leading a campaign of awareness about the prevalence of modern slavery. I presented to the Australian Institute of Company Directors (alongside the CEO of Human Rights Australia) and Family Business Australia on compliance with modern slavery legislation. While engagements such as these present business development opportunities, they go well beyond that. Every presentation I can make about modern slavery, every conversation I can have with a potential or existing client, every statement I draft or audit I recommend helps to chip away at a problem that can no longer be tolerated”.

“In 2017, the International Labour Organization reported that 40.3 million people were in modern slavery around the world with a disproportionate amount of these being women and girls. The thought of these people and the reality of their lives is what drives me every day to make a difference.”

Director and Team Leader, Megan Jongebloed was full of praise for Emma. “Emma is a doer and a leader which is evident from her role in the roll-out of Cowell Clarke’s Modern Slavery offering. She already has the respect and following of the more junior members of our team who often seek her guidance and counsel. Her technical ability and client management skills are excellent. I really could not ask for a better team member. I look forward to watching her career flourish with Cowell Clarke – we really are lucky to have her as part of the team.”

Award recipients represent a true cross-section of the legal industry, recognising the contributions of the profession’s most senior ranks through to its rising stars.

Emma would be a worthy winner of the award and everyone at Cowell Clarke wishes her every bit of luck!

Emma said that she was humbled to be recognised and proud to be named as a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards 2020.
