Minimum wage increased despite concerns over increasing unemployment

Despite suggestions unemployment is expected to rise in Australia and that our economy is performing below trends, the Fair Work Commission has today decided that minimum wages will increase as of July 2014.

The increases which will operate from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2015 are:

  • wages under all modern awards are increased by 3%; and
  • the minimum wage will increase from $622.20 per week (or $16.37 per hour) to $640.90 (or $16.87 per hour).

Employees paid in line with (or wages close to) the minimum rates of pay under an Award will therefore be entitled to a higher rate of pay as of July 2014.
